THE WORLD ACCORDING TO HONEY BEAR Honey Bear, the author of this book, is the service dog for co-author Catherine Rodríguez, Ed.D. Catherine is not only Honey Bear’s “People Mom,” she is also a Parkinson’s Disease patient and active in advocacy work for the Parkinson’s Association of San Diego. This book was written to teach children about Parkinson’s, and about the close and helping relationship between a patient and her service dog – essential for companionship, assistance in regulating movement, and providing daily routines for the person with Parkinson’s. The book is meant to be shared and read with children. It is rich with photographs of Honey Bear, and full of notable quotations about dogs. Although most of it can be read by a child past the earliest stage of reading, some concepts such as patient advocacy and neurodegenerative diseases will need to be explained. Honey Bear describes her daily routine, as well as how she has helped her “people family” in some emergency situations. Chapter titles like “Presidents and Their Dogs,” “Things I Love and Hate,” and “My First Plane Trip” indicate the breadth of information this book contains – offered in an intimate first-person voice, dog to child. All children will enjoy reading about the adventures of Honey Bear. However, children with someone in their life who suffers from a neurodegenerative disease like Parkinson’s will be especially touched. This book is an excellent tool for beginning the difficult discussion of how, and why, their family member is changing. As Honey Bear says I hope that this book will inspire people with Parkinson’s to get a dog. We are the best medicine— better than anything the neurologists prescribe. All proceeds from the sale of this book are donated by the authors to the Parkinson’s Association of San Diego.

I enjoyed reading this book and can relate to the wonderful services pet companions do for us humans! Thank you Catherine Rodríguez for bringing this important message to the public. What a clever way to present the information from Honey Bear's perspective! I am an Occupational Therapy provider, and have utilized visiting therapy pets as a therapy program and saw the benefits canines brought to the mental health setting. The contents of this story are directed towards helping children to understand the meaning of service dogs and is a beautiful way to introduce children to the world of disabled individuals and the benefits of service dogs! Hats off to you Catherine! In Dec 2010, I injured and broke my little toe - tried to "break my fall" whip-lashed my neck and ended up with a spinal cord injury at the cervical C-5 level. I required surgery to prevent further neurological damage to my arms, hands, legs! After surgery in March 2011, I needed to relearn all personal care tasks, ambulation and balance skills! I worked hard in the Rehab setting, however, I still struggle with walking and maintaining my balance. In July of 2011, my wonderful pet companion - a Minature Pincher named Harley, came into my life and I'm thrilled to say he's been the best theray of all for me! He motivated me enough to get the courage to go out and work on my gait and balance without fear of falling again. I soon realized the tension from holding onto the leash - with this little guy (6 pounds in all!) at the other end, pulling as we walked, helped to counter-balance me and today, I have been able to increase my walking skills (up to 6 small- town blocks) with the help of this special little fellow! I could not have done this without my best friend and companion and know that he knows he's been a blessing to me, my "Angel", given the assignment "Job" to help me as my own, personal therapy "walking" assistant! and companion!

The World According to Honey Bear Catherine Rodríguez EdD 9788190969321 Books Reviews
Great book, helpful in teaching children about what a service dog does
Honey Bear takings everything in stride, from the raccoons partying in the trees late at night to spitting out the mouse she scooped up as it skidded across the living room floor. Honey Bear's people mom has Parkinsons and Honey Bear is her service dog. That means Honey Bear walks by her side to 'set her gait' and if she 'freezes' Honey Bear can help by tapping her foot to get her going again. Both Honey Bear and her people mom, Catherine Rodriquez love kids and this book was written so children can learn more about the life and duties of a service dog. Honey Bear is a local celebrity and serves as the mascot for the San Diego Parkinsons Association. Reading this book gave me a dogs eye view that helping with Parkinsons is just one of many ways service dogs normalize a persons life.
As a clinical neurologist who specialized in Parkinson's disease, I found this book to be a great read, not just for youngsters but for all age groups. Honey Bear is clearly much more than a companion dog...she is also a therapist, physical trainer and an astute observer of humans all rolled up in one ball of fur.
This book touched me in a way that reminds me of why I chose medicine as a career...to understand human nature and to help people. I heartily recommend this to anyone whose life has been touched by Parkinson's disease.

The book did an excellent job of explaining the job and adventurous life of service. It is geared towards children. Honey Bear is a service dog trained to work with Parkinson's patients.
Great book!!
THIS IS A STORY FOR EVERYONE AND EVERY AGE. A TRUE INSIGHT INTO LIVING WITH A SERVICE DOG. THE WORD "SERVICE" DOESN'T COMPLETELY COVER THE FULL MEANING OF WHAT A DOG LIKE HONEY BEAR MEANS TO IT'S PARTNER. WONDERFUL BOOK!!

I bought several copies of this book to give to my grandson and great nieces and nephews. My husband has had Parkinson's disease with dementia for over 20 years. This book, written by a person with Parkinson's, helps the kids understand grandpa and uncle.
