Denholm Carew enjoys a life most would envy. Scion of a wealthy family on New London, he can have almost anything he wants. But what he wants more than anything is the freedom to make his own way and build his own legacy to pass down to his children. Together with his wife, Lynelle, he sells everything to buy shares in colonial company and settle the newly discovered world of Dalthus IV.
Planetfall is a prequel to the Alexis Carew series, which starts with Into the Dark. If you’re new to the series, I suggest starting with Into the Dark, rather than Planetfall, as this story was written more for someone who’s already a fan of the series and is interested in more background on some of the characters and customs.
Also, Planetfall is available free to subscribers to my mailing list … so there’s that.

Planetfall A Story of the Dark Alexis Carew Book 101 eBook JA Sutherland
This fairly substantial story, probably closer to a novelette, isa prequel to Sutherland's "Alexis Carew" books. Here we learn how
Alexis's grandfather, Denholm Carew, came to emmigrate to a new and
raw colony world, how he made an enemy worse than he ever knew, and
how the boneheaded inheritance system that was a big plot driver
for the first Alexis book ever came to be enacted. There's a lot
of ground to cover, so we get a fair number of isolated vingettes
but the story hangs together pretty well, and Carew and his wife
are good characters. I don't think this would be a good introduction
to the series, because what we already know throws a lot of light
on things that are a mystery to Denholm, but if you have read the
rest of the series, this is a satisfying dose of backstory.

Planetfall A Story of the Dark Alexis Carew Book 101 eBook JA Sutherland Reviews
Full of hope the parents of Alexis father plan (gather all they have, selling everything they can to buy shares in a new world)
to begin a new life there. This is the background of Alexis life and helps to understand the why of many issues in the series.
I've reviewed other books, and series, here. THIS ONE tire my heart out with what happened. I've read tragic events in other sci-fi novels (Heinlein, Ringo, and Weber have ALL been berated, gently, by me - Heinlein may have been on his own death bed when he read my missive), so I'm rather inured to them by now.
But they can still catch me off-guard.
WELL-DONE.
Strong writing, and though I am usually somewhat trepedacious when an author leaves the main character of a series and keeps writing, especially when he leaves the military, and likely battle behind, JA has done it very well. The combat more between man and beast, conflict more political between colonist, but well developed characters and realistic concerns (though some wrongheaded). Absorbing and deep.
Because this is a prequel there are things I knew had to happen in the story. That made it hard to invest in the characters but they are so well written and set in such interesting situations that I kept going and really enjoyed the tale. This book is proof of the writing skills of J. A. Sutherland. To fill a defined time in a family history with so much freshness, humor, and feeling is an admirable talent and a blessing to we readers.
Decent read, kind of confusing about the kid introduced, since I know Alexis is a girl. Who the heck is Harlyn? I suppose it will all be revealed in time. I can't really get wrapped around the whole "dark" thing and "sailing" space ships, but the rest of Sutherland's stuff is good reading.
While the author generously gives you a copy if you sign up for the newsletter, I purchased my copy anyway. It's quite different from the navy yet it still has that delightful quality that keeps me coming back for more. And frankly I don't see any condescension against women mentioned by another reviewer. Dated sexism perhaps. But one can tell that the authors heart really isn't in it. As soon as the plot lines are stable, my guess is that the sexism will depart. Anyway, the pluses far outweigh the minuses. For a grand gentle story, read this book.
Lt Alexis Carew comes from the hopes of her pioneer family.
Prequel read on the series. Fun, engaging, enjoyable from the first book.
Start there reading 'Into the Dark' (Alexis Carew Book 1) since Planetfall is about Alexis' family and what happened to get her there, all alone, a life marked by great loss, great loss indeed...
From my read of 'Into the Dark' (Alexis Carew Book 1) Coming of age, joining the workforce, joining the navy of New London among the stars, navigating the dark expanse of lonely space, discovering more of yourself.
Reading the whole series, yes!
